Awe: a Joy Seed Practice

Bush berry

Awe

A Joy Seed Practice

I remember the red berries that grew in the shrub off my childhood home’s porch. We would pop them off, put them in piles, and pretend to cook them for our make-believe restaurant. The slime of their innards would bubble in the sun like fresh dew and hold the light like magic.

I was walking with my son yesterday and saw some on a neighbor’s bush. I had to stop, pluck one off, turn it over, and squeeze, waiting with childlike glee for the familiar ball to rise from its surface.

I showed it to him, held it in the sunlight like the little transparent pearl it is, and savored it with wonder. He looked. I don’t think he saw it and felt the glow like I did, but I know he saw the awe on my face and that was just as important. When was the last time I gave myself permission to stop, savor, and glow?

Awe is joy work. Sharing awe is also joy work. May we all find small moments of beauty to savor this day.
